Condolences, April 19, 2007

I am of the Jewish faith. I am sure that most victims were not Jewish.  However, I include this blessing in their honor.  It is a blessing called the “Kaddish” that extols life, not death. It is read at the end of every service for people who are in mourning and on the anniversary of a person’s death. So I am including it here:

“May the great Name of God be exalted and sanctified, throughout the world, which he has created according to his will. May his Kingship be established in your lifetime and in your days, and in the lifetime of the entire household of Israel, swiftly and in the near future; and say, Amen.
May his great name be blessed, forever and ever.
Blessed, praised, glorified, exalted, extolled, honored elevated and lauded be the Name of the holy one, Blessed is he- above and beyond any blessings and hymns, Praises and consolations which are uttered in the world; and say Amen. May there be abundant peace from Heaven, and life, upon us and upon all Israel; and say, Amen.

He who makes peace in his high holy places, may he bring peace upon us, and upon all Israel; and say Amen.

To Virginia Tech:
The events of April 16 were so overwhelmingly tragic.  I am going to be a freshman in college next year, and just the idea of that happening at any school is frightening.  This is truly a horrible situation but the strentgh of the Virginia Tech community that I have seen, even if its just over the TV (I live in Missouri) is a truly moving thing.  The people who have passed, those wounded, the loved ones left behind, and the whole campus and community of Virginia Tech are in my prayers, and the prayers of my school.  May God continue to bring the citizens of the VT community together and pull all of you through this time of mourning.

As the parents of an incoming Freshman student, we are touched and saddened by the tragedy at Virginia Tech this week. We have been riveted to the coverage at the university. The reaction of students and staff, the support for one another and the administration interview after interview have shown us what an admirable community our son will be a part of next year. His
determination and ours have not changed as a result of this tragic event. Our thoughts and prayers are with each member of the Virginia Tech community, especially those families who are enduring immeasurable loss.

As an older graduate student at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, I am always happy to be in the company of younger undergraduates.  Therefore, I am filled with so much sadness for all of you affected by this tragedy.  I can’t begin to imagine what it must be like.

Please know that the thoughts and prayers of many here are with all of you.  Our governor has ordered all flags in the state be flown at half mast.  Tommorrow at noon, all churches here have been asked to ring their bells.  Many of the colleges and universities here in Rhode Island have or will be having candle light vigils.

May God bless all of you.

My heart cries out for each of you in the Virginia Tech family & Blacksburg community.

I have learned through experience that no words ever created by man can make the pain go away. Nothing can make this “better” Please know, however, that the Hokie family will forever be in my heart for the rest of my days.

I know that noone can truly understand what you are going through unless they’ve been through that same type of experience or very similar themselves...May it be of some comfort to you that you are thought of, cared about and prayed for on a daily basis.

I will forever be a Virginia Tech/Hokie fan now. Your unity amidst immense tragedy spoke volumes to all of us. You taught us what Hokie pride is all about. I would be very proud for my 5 1/2 yr old and 2 1/2 yr old sons to some day be Hokies for what it is worth…

Please let me know of ways that I may help the Hokie family. I want to help with more than just words and prayers.

Rose Beyond the Wall
by A.L. Frink

A rose once grew
where all could see,
sheltered beside
a garden wall,
And as the days passed
swiftly by,
it spread its branches, straight and tall…

One day, a beam of light
shone through
a crevice that had
opened wide ~
The rose bent gently
toward its warmth
then passed beyond
to the other side

Now, you who deeply
feel its loss,
be comforted ~ the rose blooms there ~
its beauty even greater now,
nurtured by
God’s own loving care.
