Condolences, April 19, 2007

There are truly no words that could ever be expressed enough to make the pain go away!  I’m a 26 year old wife & mother of 2 living in Charlottesville, VA & am still trying to cope with this tragedy.  I didn’t know any of the lost victims or the surviving ones, but I can truly say that just hearing their names & seeing their pictures makes me feel very close to them.  For 26 years, I’ve been raised to be a UVA fan & always looked forward to the Hokies vs. Cavalier footballs games & the “rival” that it would bring, but today & forever, I will always be a “Hokalier” & will never forget those families, friends & community that lost so much so suddenly & so wrongfully.  My heart goes out to each & everyone affected by this horrible tragedy & like everyone else has stated, my thoughts, prayers & respect are with you all in this time of sorrow.  May God Bless you all, here on earth as well as in the beautiful Heavens above.  Keep your heads up, Hokies, b/c you all are our future & a wonderful example for this nation!!

With Deepest Regards,

Genna Weakley-Flint

I know there are no words to lessen your sorrows but being a NY’er who lost dear friends on 9/11 I know it helped to know that millions of total strangers had us in their prayers. I’ve been to your campus for a football game years ago & it was one of the most beautiful areas of the US I’ve ever seen--It’s truly “God’s Country”. Take the time to mourn & stay close with your classmates & loved ones. The pain will lessen but the memories will always be with you. Remember them for what “they” would want for you--for you to do your very best. God Bless all of you.

First, I would like to send my condolences to everyone whose life that has been affected by this tragedy.

I am planning to attend Virginia Tech this summer and felt I was lucky to hopefully get the opportunity to be a Hokie.  After seeing the students, staff, and faculty at Virginia Tech and the community come together after this horrific tragedy, I feel even more honored to potentially be a part of the Hokie family.

I grew up in Roanoke and while I did not go to Tech, it has always been a very important part of my life.  I have spent countless Saturdays during the Fall attending football games. Visited many friends at VT throughout the years.  I’ve always been amazed by the beauty of the campus and the kindness of its people.
To be completely honest, nothing I can remember has affected me as much as this.  A tragic event hitting so close to home, while I am so far away, has torn me apart. Normally I do not break down and cry. Normally my emotions are not on the surface. Normally I just move on.  Not this time.  This time it is too tragic, too terrible, and too incomprehensible to just move on.
But I will, but we all will.  My heart goes out to all those effected. The families of the victims, their friends, all the students, the staff, the guman’s family, all members of the Hokie Nation, and everyone watching world wide This is a terrible event no one can comprehend.  To the entire Hokie Nation, lift your head up, wear your colors with pride, and remember that we will move forward.

Dear Hokies:

I send my sincerest condolences.  As a recently graduated CEE Hokie, I am deeply hurt and wish I could be there with you.  I chose to become part of VT’s grad program for the welcoming and warm people as well as the esteemed research.  Though we have suffered and lost, we will not forget our friends and colleagues, the people that make VT strong.  My thoughts are constantly with you,

How do you stop thinking thoughts too awful to feel?
How do you stop realizing the pain that’s all too real?
How do you stop hearing one voice still howling from the grave?
How do you stop hearing voiceless victims dying to be saved?

Oh, Love, rain down on your people and wash the hate away,
Love, we need your refreshing shower for those who’ve gone astray,
Love will heal the hearts of those who are feeling rejected,
Love will touch the hearts of those who are feeling neglected.

But what is the answer for those with questions in their minds?
Most of us would answer, “It’s just the sign of the times.”
“What?” When it looks like evil is having free reign,
Is Paul right when he said, “To live is Christ and to die is gain?”

Evil needs to know that we will not tolerate his power,
Each time he raises his evil head, we will raise ours,
We will unite in love, in hope, in trust and in victory,
We will unite in prayer, in faith, in power and in unity.

No weapon that is formed against us will ever succeed,
For God will comfort the hearts of those who are in need,
He will avenge the innocent blood and each teardrop of pain,
He will avenge, for those who died did not die in vain.

To those still hospitalized, I wish a quick recovery. You and your families are not alone.

To all students, I have never been more proud to say that I am a Virginia Tech alum. Your composure, eloquence, and resolve demonstrated since this horrific tragedy provides an example for all of the Virginia Tech family to follow, whether in Blacksburg or beyond. It escapes me to express the comfort and healing that you have provided me over these difficult days. All I can say is thank you.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Today, we are all Hokies.

In such a dark moment, there present were thousands of people—bearers of light—blanketing the campus in a glow of love.
May the light that you shared to comfort each other that night lift the campus of Virginia Tech forever out of this darkness.
Students, teachers, campus staff and alumni—you are all in my deepest prayers.
