I so wanted to commend the students and faculty of Virginia Tech for your dignity and class in the face of such a horrifying event. Over and over I’ve seen wonderful examples of maturity and strength even in the face of so much media wanting...... almost begging for someone to point a finger of blame.  You have, by your actions, shown the world that America should be judged by your example, not by a deranged murderer’s horrendous act.

I can’t even begin to comprehend the depth of your emotions this past week, but know that you have earned incredible respect for how you have handled yourself.

Our prayers are with you all. . . Teresa Knabe

Kia ora from Aotearoa New Zealand.
I watched, with horror, as the tragedy of the campus shooting was played on television here in New Zealand.I’d like to express my condolances, and to say that the vigil - with acres of candles, and the eerie sound of many sets of keys shaking, was moving, even to us here so far away.

I am at a conference of the Western Association of Schools and College. Today before lunch began, the president of WASC asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of tragedy at Virginia Tech. As educators and administrators devoted to creating a safe space for learning and achievement, the pain in the room was palpable. No words can convey the sorrow in my own heart. Please know that our group of 800+ educators is thinking about the students, staff, and faculty at Virginia Tech and praying for peace.

Dear Families, Friends and Staff of Virginia Tec University,

As I sit here and listen to the news my heart breaks, knowing there is nothing I can do or say to help ease your pain. I watch the news and I hear you describing your family members, friends, coworkers and I see such love in your eyes, in your hearts. There is such bravery and pride. I kneel in prayer and ask God to embrace you as you walk through the sad days ahead. I ask God to comfort you and to heal your broken hearts. Reading the condolences people have written to you, one in particular stands out, a poem, and I wish to repeat it here. It’s beautiful and there is such comfort in the words and their meaning.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
