For Nikki: A Tribute to Virginia Tech

32 last breaths left this world breathless…
I slipped on my house shoes,
Poured me a bowl of cereal
And turned on CNN for breakfast
I tried adjusting the color,
But my screen was painted red
32 dead
Casualties climbing
It was selfish, but I thought of Nikki
Selected Poems of Love Poems Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea,
That I all have in My House
All blew open as a deathly wind
Snatched my breath away like I was an asthmatic
I flipped the channels, looking for Nikki
For Nikki to shed some light, to give some meaning
For Nikki to breathe life back into me
For Nikki to breathe…
I remembered the moment she inspired me,
And I wondered if this monster tried to balance his grade average
If he’d only read it
If he’d only read her
He would have been cured, his demons chased away
32 lives saved
How can we now balance 32 lives lost?

As parents of a Virginia Tech graduate, our hearts are united in grief with all members of the Hokie Nation, in Blacksburg and throughout the world. We are all victims; our hope is that the light of spirit that has always characterized the VT community will continue to shine through these days of darkness. God bless Virginia Tech. Go Hokies.

We, at the University of Indianapolis Athens Campus - administration, staff and faculty - extend our deepest and most sincere thoughts and sadness to everyone at the Virginia Tech.
We were shocked and horrified with this tragedy and our hearts go, also, to the families of those lost who have to live for the rest of their lives with pain, sadness, anguish and, we might say, disgust.

To the students and faculty of Virginia Tech and the State of Virginia:

I am originally from Richmond, Virginia currently serving in the USAF stationed in Tampa, Fl and I was apalled by the actions of this individual.  I will pray for the families, students and faculty during this difficult time.  During times such as these; it is important that everyone’s individual strength and courage and faith in God is brought to the forefront.  I am proud of the strength and courage of the “COMMONWEALTH”.  May God bless you and protect you and allow your healing to begin.  Chris

I am from Canada and when we heard of your tragedy we were shocked and saddened. We hope that everyone will come together to help eachother through this difficult time. We know that it will be a long process but with a little perserverience and a community full of strength you will overcome but never forget the individuals that were lost. Here is a poem that I found I hope it helps

“Life Is A Journey”

Death is the continuation of the journey.
Heaven is a temporary rest.
For the commencement and fulfilment
Of a new life, a new hope
And a new promise”

Our family wanted to express our sorrow at this terrible terrible tragedy.  Our prayers and condolences go out to you and your families at this time.  I hope one day that people like the shooter can express their anger in different ways instead of hurting others.  I hope something positive comes out of this.

My heart weeps as I think of those whose lives were taken at Vtech on 04.16 - I only wish I had the powers to take away the pain and give back the lives that have been cut short.

To the families and friends of the victims may God give you the serenity to deal with your grief.

Lest we not forget the staff, those law enforcement officers, medical staff and all those associated with this day. This has surely altered their lives too.

I thought this poem is something that may give some comfort.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow
I am the sunLight on the ripened grain
I am the gently falling autumn rain

When you wake in the morning hush
I am the swift upLighting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight
I am the soft starLight at night
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep

-- Hopi prayer

God Bless

My thoughts and prayers are with the survivors of this horrible tragedy, as well as the families and friends of the victims.  I can not imagine what it would be like to go through something like this; or to lose a son, daughter, brother, sister, or other family member to such an open display of hatred toward humanity.

I live in Canton, TX where we recently had a disgruntled parent shoot one of the coaches at our high school.  Our school immediately went on lock down until the man was caught.  My daughter was a Senior at the time, and I was terrified until I heard she was okay. With this recent tragedy, I can’t help but think about how my life would’ve drastically changed if things would’ve turned out differently in our town. My daughter is attending college now at Texas A & M-Commerce, and I am grateful that she is still alive and able to keep going, but also will be more fearful until she graduates.  I can not begin to imagine how the victims’ families are dealing with the grief. I really wish there was something I could do, other than just pray.  I will pray every day that your fears and grief lesson each day.  God Bless You All!  Your Texas Friend, Rhonda
