As an alumnus, I share the grief with those in Blacksburg, even though I live 2 hours away and have years removed from graduation.  My prayers are with all that are greiving...students, friends, family and even alumni.  The words “Hokie Nation” and “Hokie Pride” have been mentioned, as to describe the love those have for Virginia Tech.  Ut Prosim comes to mind right now. Let us serve each other as we grieve and reflect on the lives lost.  - AJZ, class of 1997

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables (from Les Misrables)

There’s a grief that can’t be spoken.
There’s a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone.

Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about `tomorrow’
And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lonely barricade at dawn.

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone.
There’s a grief that can’t be spoken.
There’s a pain goes on and on.

Phantom faces at the window.
Phantom shadows on the floor.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.

Oh my friends, my friends, don’t ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more.

As educators we are both saddened and heartbroken by the loss of many young lives that had such promising and bright futures.  Some of my former students that I had taught, who decided to attend Virginia Tech after high school graduation; often spoke of the “Hokie Family Spirit” that was evident throughout the campus community, whenever I spoke to them in the latter years of their highly successful lives. We offer our heartfelt prayers and condolences to the Virginia Tech student body and the Families that have suffered the loss of their loved ones to this horrific tragedy.

I cannot imagine the loss that you and your families are feeling at this time.  I am so sorry for the ordeal that the shooter put you all through, he is only remembered for the horrible thing that he did.  What this country will remeber is the strenght of your campus and the bravery of the survivors and those innocent people who were taken before they should have.  I know that my words cannot begin to heal you but I hope that might offer a bit of comfort to at least one person who so tragically was affected.

My prayers are with all of you,

I heard about the massacre in the radio, and i´m very sad about what happend. What may happen to this sick soul, who killed all the others. maybe he sold his soul to the devil, and now god will judge him. But we should forgive him, and pray for the souls of all the students and teachers.

“ Der allmächtige Vater soll schützend halten seine Hand über ihre Seelen und den Mörder von seinem seelischen Dämon befreien. Möge der Herr wachen über die Familien der Opfer, welche nun leiden unsägliche Qualen.”

I´m sorry for all the families.

In love,

From an ordinary mum in Surrey, England, with children at University, my heart aches for you and your losses.  No parent should have to bury their children; I cannot begin to imagine your grief and, for what it’s worth, my prayers and thoughts are with you, as are those of my children and their friends.  This desperate tragedy has touched a lot of people, both young and old, across the world.  I know that won’t help you now, maybe never, but those people will never be forgotten, nor should they ever be.  May your God go with you, and comfort you.  Suzy MJ

To all
I send my sincere and complete condolences in this terrible time of sorrow.  Ive shed a constant stream of tears both physical and emotional since I found out about this horrible tragedy.  I will soon be entering college and actually considered attending VT at one point.  This reveals a horrific reality that we should all appreciate life and not take our days we have here for granted.  I will continue to keep all victims, families, and all other associates in my prayers as we all try to get through this difficult time.

We are very saddened of these tragic events.  It’s hard to believe that a person in so much emotional pain, in turn, inflicts even greater and lasting pain on the innocent and undeserving student body of Virginia Tech.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you have been forever changed by these events.

My uncle Dr. Jim Littlefield is a distinguished professor there and while we are grateful for his safety, we identify with those who have lost their beloved professors, instructors and mentors as well in this tragic event.

May you find comfort in the small and large memories you have of everyone who is now absent from this life.

Time heals - but may your memories of those you are separate from never fade and remain with you always.

The following is from my daughter’s myspace; she will be an incoming freshman in August 2007:

April 16. 2007 Always in my heart ¢¾
If you ask me what I am, as of today April 16, 2007, I am a Hokie. I am proud to wear orange and maroon more than ever. I am counting down the days until August when I go to Virginia Tech. I am looking forward to the football games and everything. Of all of the things I am looking forward to, the one I am looking forward to the most is the true college experience that I will get at VT. If anything, the events of today will only make the incoming freshman class more united and Hokie spirited. I, for one, am proud to be a HOKIE.

Our condolences to all that have been affected, in one way or another.

The faculty, staff and students of Agape Christian High School are all deeply saddened by the extreme tragedy suffered by the families of the killed and wounded of Virginia Tech.  We will gather for focused and concentrated prayer for all at our chapel time on Thursday (19th) afternoon.  Although we do not have the names of all of the victims, we will do our best to try to envision these loved ones and their families.
We reach out with compassion also to the family of Mr. Cho.  We have noted with much interest how so many attempts were made to try to break through his mental morass, with great concern for the desperation in which he immersed himself.  This gives us all cause to search our own relationships to look more deeply into how we can more positively touch the lives of those whose lifestyle cries out for attention.  Thank you to all of Va. Tech who sincerely attempted to address Mr. Cho’s life.
May God richly bless your campus and families with His promises of hope for all.

I know no one personally at VT. I do have friends of friends who have been affected personally. In this world that is so large it seems so small as we all have friends of friends of friends who have been touched by this tragedy. It must be hard to see the coverage on TV what seems like 24/7. What I would like you all to know is that not only is the world mourning with you but we are cheering for you. Cheering for your courage and strength. Cheering for your love of your school, community and most of all your fellow Hokies! We cheer for you knowing that you will prevail in life and that those who have lost their lives will never be forgotten. You are all in my thoughts and my heart again today.

On Tuesday, the scheduled topic in my class was on “Emergency Preparedness”. It was quite unfortunate the topic coincided with Monday events. I cannot help but keep thinking what the survivors and other students are struggling with this difficult period. Some could have been looking foward to graduating in a few weeks, other looking foward to end the semester to be with their loved ones, but all hopes ended in a split second. This is quite unfortunate but I pray that all invovlved directly or indirectly accept my solace this very delicate time.
