Understanding life is a lifelong goal. I am deeply saddened by what has happened. They say to live your life so that there is only standing room at your funeral. I know that for all those students and teachers, there will ONLY be standing room. My husband and I will plant a tree in memory of all the students and teachers from VT that have died a sensless death. It will be planted in Sublette, Illinois, town of 400 in the midwest. Love and peace, Gary and Elizabeth Magnuson

I am an undergraduate student in California. Up until yesterday alls I knew about your college was sports. Never did I imagine that those great walls contained some of the most brilliant young minds that we were all robbed of as a result of this tragedy. I can only imagine what it is like for all of you, students and faculty, to have your home violated in such a manner that makes no sense. As I watch the news and interviews I am impressed with your family.

I’m trying to stay strong. But, at times, waves of emotion cause me to burst into tears. The pain is almost more than I can bear. I am a Hokie.

I was lucky to get into Virginia Tech in 1979. Quite honestly, I was even luckier to graduate in 1984. Some of the greatest days of my life were spent on that pastoral campus, surrounded by castles made of Hokie stone. In the fall, the leaves change to create a panorama of orange and maroon, just in time for football season. In the winter, the campus looks like picture on a holiday card. Spring signals a time play Frisbee on the Prairie or take a walk through Slusher beach. Although this spring is different, we will get through these dark days, and we’ll come back even stronger.

“Hokie Nation” is not just a marketing phrase to support our football team. We are a powerful community and we will always be a tight society. We share the same memories; the cold wind in your face as you walk across the Drillfield on your way to class, visions of Michael Vick racing down the sideline, a juicy cheeseburger at Mike’s, and a laugh with your friends at Top of the Stairs.

For the rest of our lives, we will raise our voices and proclaim with boundless pride, “I AM A HOKIE!”

I was not there and never knew those people who were murdered, but their death hurts me a lot. I am tongue-tied.I can’t speak. Can’t say anything. Can’t believe anything. Can’t do anything. My senses are suspended. It very much feels like an unreality. I am frozen yet alive with angst. Too many complex emotions to sort out. Just wanna cry.  I believe we are living in The Times. Keep you in my prayers as i wrestle with God on this issue. It hurts a whole lot.

May God the creator of the universe, cover your campus during this time.  May you all feel him as you are walking across campus, as you are working on campus, and as you are healing as a campus.  Know that God has you in the palms of his hands and that he is not going to let you fall.

I read 2 Samuel 22 when I am down or discouraged, it reminds me that God will do anything and everything to get to his children.

I will continue to pray for you as a community and for the families over the next days and weeks.

God, protect and keep them.  Strengthen them and guide them.  Let fear not enter any of them at VT, rather let them know that you are in control and that you are the one leading them through this dark time.  Bless them Lord God.  Bless them with the memories of their fallen friends, bring smiles to their faces.  We praise you God, for we know that in the end you are the one who will prevail. Amen.
