Dear Virginia Tech students, faculty and family,
I have two children in college one here in Illinois and one in Virginia. I worry every day for their well being and their futures.
Please do go on and finish your school year the way it was intended with good final grades. For if you let this tragedy steal your future from you it will be even more of a tragedy. Feel comforted that you have each other and the World is behind you 200%.
Take care and God Bless.

by Darrell J. Banks

To the students, parents and faculty of VT.

In the midst of chaos, God lives.
In pain, our failure to forgive, God loves us.
Time moves on, days change, challenges unfold,
but the dead live among us within our minds, our dreams, our hope.

Years move into centuries, life creates newborns,
stone monuments are erected, people walk by.
Who can explain why the stars really move, is it gravity, or the birth of a universe.

If I challenge myself, will I forgive myself when fate changes a plan, a thought. Death is real, but so is life, but to understand life
one must forgive evil and rejoin with love for God is love, even in the midst of evil.

Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, [a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

Dear Hokie Family,

We have never been “official” Hokies, but we have many, many friends who are.  Having lived in Salem, VA briefly, we know something of the camaraderie and kinship that Hokies have, as well as the Hokie pride that is innate in that area of Virginia.  You are all in our deepest thoughts and prayers.  Know that we grieve with you and that our loving God is grieving as well.  May you all find solace and hope in the presence of family, friends, and may you know that our Lord is with you.

In 1961 my husband was a student in the Engineering Department at Tech.  Blacksburg was our home for 4 years.

It is hard to comprehend what has happened there.  The campus was always such a beautiful and safe place to be.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of the students, facility and family members.

As I have watched the news of the shootings my heart has been heavy with sorrow and grief for your university. I know that many including me are shedding tears with you and send forth our prayers. I would also like to send you the lyrics to an old gosple song that has given me comfort in my own trials.

Be Strong And Take Courage

Be strong and take courage
Do not fear or be dismayed
For the Lord will go before you
And His life will show the way
Be strong and take courage
Do not fear or be dismayed
For the one who lives within you
Will be strong in you today.

Why don’t you give him all of your fears
Why don’t you let Him wipe all of your tears
He knows He’s been through pain before
And He knows all that you’ve been looking for
(Repeat chorus)

Nothing can take you out of His hand
Nothing can face you that you can’t command
I know that you will always be
In His love in His power
You will be free.

"It’s hard to say why they had to go so soon, so young.  But when people reach their utmost state of perfection on earth, they are to do the work of angels.”

The promise and the futures that were so shamelessly and brutally ripped away on Monday cannot and will not ever be forgotten.  Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, Aunt and Uncles, Neices an Nephews who will have to press on in a world where their loved ones were taken from them in the cruelest possible way.  I found it truly inspiring to see your student body in their colors chanting Let’s Go Hokies at the top of their lungs. I implore you all cry if you haven’t let your emotions out, seek out those who love you and draw strength from them. Lean on us and we promise we will not let you down.  You have all been and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.  I encourage anybody reading this who has no affiliation to Virginia Tech to see if you can’t find a few extra dollars lying around and order yourself a VT Tshirt, Hat, or sweatshirt as I have.  The members of this community need our support and strength now more than ever.  I will never forget the image of a sea of maroon and orange clad students with tears streaming down their face chanting Let’s Go Hokies.  Your courage is inspiration to us all.  May God bless you all and keep you safe!

As I read the quote of one of the fathers, “My baby didn’t make it” it broke my heart. How can a parent bear such a loss? What can be said or done now for those that have lost someone so precious and irreplaceable?

Their is one person who understands the pain of loosing His only child to death. He is God in heaven, creator of heaven and earth. He watched while people killed His innocent Son, just as He saw the innocent murdered on April 16th. He is well acquainted with this type of pain, because He also went through it. He is the only one that can touch us in the place of such unbearable pain. I know many are turning to Him in this time of grief, I pray He will be found by all those who grieve. Although their is great evil in this world, the Lord once said to be of good cheer, because He has overcome the world. He also overcame death. The Lord is greater than the evil. May our hope be in Him.

As a survivor of the attacks that took place on 9/11/01 - my heart and prayers go out to all the victims, families of the victims and everyone else involved.  We can not understand why these things happen?  Where is God in a time like this?  HE is with you all… and the victims of the shootings are in a much better place - so much better - we can’t even imagine.  I am sorry for your pain - I pray for the shooter.  I saw some pictures of the victims on TV and each and everyone of these beautiful people look beautiful and so happy - they obviously lived life to the fullest.  May God be with you all at this confusing time.  My prayers and thoughts are with you continually.

Dear faculty, students, alumni:

As a graduate from a fellow ACC school, I want to say that anyone who remembers college life remembers it as the happiest years of their life.  It breaks my heart that this tragedy will live with you all forever.  My heart and prayers go out to the families of all who died.

And to Ryan Clark’s family and fellow band members, I cried when I saw his band picture since, I too, was in my college marching band.  Although he was at VT, it is like loosing one of our own band family.  I am just glad heaven has another talented musician.

To all those affected by the Virginia Tech Shootings,
I pray for all of you and keep you all in my heart.  The people who were lost on Monday I believe are now in heaven as angels, serving to protect all college students.  Nothing can be said or done to make this horrid event better or less awful.  But I want you all to know that this memory will always remain in my heart.  The shooter’s intentions will not win out - for we will survive and go on.  He will not conquer but will be forgotten while the memory of those who were killed will live forever.

To the Virginia Tech faculty, students, families, and your friends:
We are so deeply sorry for the tragedy that took place on your campus this past week, and for the lose of those precious lives that resulted.
We hope these words of Charles Dickens will bring some comfort to you:
“When death strikes down the innocent and young, for every fragile form from which he lets the panting spirit free, a hundred virtues rise, in shapes of mercy, charity, and love, to walk the world, and bless it.”

As I have watched the Columbine and Platte Canyon High School shootings here in Colorado, and now Virginia Tech, it makes me realize just how precious life is.  Hug your heart, take time to heal, show love and support to others, and as Emily Keys said (the high school girl shot and killed in Colorado) “do random acts of kindness to others”.  We are with you in prayer.

I would just like to share a few of my favorite quotes with all of V.Tech, these words have shed light in some of my darkest moments so I would like to give them to you in hope that someone might find comfort as well. V.Tech you are all in the prayers of every scholastic member at East Carolina University.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

“Sing like no one’s listening, love like you’ve never been hurt, dance like nobody’s watching, and live like its heaven on earth.”

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul.
And sings the tune
Without the words,
and never stops at all.
Emily Dickinson
