I would just like to let the students, university staff, faculty, families, and the whole community know that I, as well as the city of Chicago, the country, and dare I say the world, is standing with you through this horrific tragedy.
I honor those who have paid the dearest price in this tragedy, and hope that their friends and family can find ways to cope and have support to lean on.
I hope we can all remember as we go about our days in the future, to be grateful for what we have and the people in our lives.
May those who have passed, Rest In Peace.

Our hearts go out to all of you.  As a parent of 4 children and getting ready to send one off to college in the fall, as I have watched all of you with the reporters speaking out about what has happened at VT, even though we don’t know you we are so very proud of how you all have handled it. We are praying for each and everyone on your campus. Know that God will never leave you or forsake you.

Grief is such an unwelcome guest for all of you who are suffering.  But like joy (that will dawn eventually), grief is a guest that must be entertained, listened to, and with God’s grace, summarily dismissed. I love all you people for your courage and grace in the face of such loss.  The poem that helped me with my grief is by W.H. Auden and it reads:

W. H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Dear Students Parents:

I know your pain today. My 18 year old son died in an accident two years ago. These are some things you are going through and things that you have yet to experience:

-the feelings when you first learned something horrible has happened
-trying to call your child on the cell phone and leaving a message begging them to pick up or return your call - they never do
-waiting for answers
-all the phone calls
-funeral plans
-the next morning when IT hits you- Your child is gone - life will never be the same.
-packing up personal belongings
-robotically moving one
-the quientness when everyone has gone back to their lives
-realizing that the latest pictures arethe last ones
-the heartaches
-worrying your child will be forgotten - they won’t

I wish I could say it becomes easier - it won’t. The pain won’t go away. I wish it could. I wish this had never happened. It has. You’ll never be the same. You WILL live on. Be strong. Know others are here knowing your pain and grieving with you. Keep your child’s memory positive. Don’t let the tragic end define the greatness of their lives. You ARE loved and in all of our thoughts and prayers.
