Condolences, April 17, 2007

Dear Virginia Tech Family,

As someone who grew up in Blacksburg and who’s parents worked at the college for over 25 years, I was deeply shocked and saddened by the terrible events of Monday.

To the students, faculty and staff and their families that were directly affected by the shootings, you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers.

To the administration of the university, stay strong and continue your solid leadership.  Don’t let the second-guessers get to you.  You did the best you could do in a very difficult situation.

It’s unthinkable to be so young and have life taken away so quickly. To those who passed, I hope you lived your life to the fullest. I hope you loved, laughed, smiled everyday and had wonderful times and memories with family and friends that will never forget you and your extreme courage. To those who are mourning, you are not alone. We mourn with you every minute of everyday. We look to heaven and know your smiling down at us. My prayers go out to Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, victims, family, and friends. Go Hokies!!

I can’t even begin to know how it feels there on campus, and in the homes of all the families after such a devastating event.  My heart goes out to all those who lost and those who are shaken so terribly from this tragedy.  Fight on Hokies, and may we all try and remember those lost on that frightening day so that we may prevent it from happening again, anywhere.

deepest regards,

People say they’re sorry,
And they mean it from the heart,
But to understand your heartache,
They couldn’t even start,
To have a loss like you have had,
Is too much to understand,
We see it and we feel for you,
But it’s only secondhand,
You’re the ones who are suffering,
And we’re the ones who care,
But if there’s anything we can do,
Call us, we’ll be there.

God Bless each and everyone that has been touched by this..

How do you even begin to put such heartache into words...?

To the students, staff, families, law enforcement, medical staff and all involved and touched by Monday’s tragedy - our thoughts are with you all though this horriffic time.

We are constantly impressed by the composure and dignity that the students at Tech display whenever on camera. You make us all proud!

The world has been robbed of the contibutions each of those killed could have given, and continued to give, this world. Those poor children… those brave teachers.

We will have heavy hearts for a long time, but will forever be: HOKIES.

On Behalf of the Members of The Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company, I offer our condolences in light of the senseless tragedy that took place on your campus.  Even as people who see tragedy more frequently than most, a horrible event like this could never become routine; and with enough awareness, they never will.

During our weekly company meeting, all of our members paid our respects by giving a moment of silence and praying for you.

Stay strong and remember everyone around you is there to support and help you get through this tough time.

I know that nothing I say will heal the pain you guys are going through. But during times like these, when it seems like there is no hope, I am reminded of a song by a band called Superchick. A part of the song says, “After all this has passed, I still will remain. After I’ve cried my last, there will be beauty from pain. Though it won’t be today, someday I’ll hope again. And there will be beauty from pain. He will bring beauty from pain.” I am praying for you guys.

To my fearless Hokies:

I was never a Hokie myself, but my sister was only a few years ago. I used to go visit her and be completely envious of the community she got to be a part of. Though its been a few years, I saw that community through my television today with students, faculty, and friends pulling together to grieve for the lives of their fellow Hokies. You all have something special inside of you that will never be taken away. You have the spirit of VA Tech that connects you. Its something that can not be explained, but you should embrace it through the next few weeks, months, years...while you continue to deal with this unspeakable event. That VA Tech spirit is still with those who lost their lives, so you can still connect with them in your own way. I’m not even alumni, and I feel it because of the love you all spread to everyone you touch. I will always feel that love, and I hope you do too. You all are amazing and I will be back as soon as I can, but in the meantime, I will be sending my love and thoughts to you.

I am deeply shocked, angered and saddened by this senseless tragedy, and my heart, thoughts and condolences go out to one and all who are directly or indirectly affected by this horrific shooting.

Here in Singapore, we join hands in prayer, together with friends and families of these 32 innocent students and professors, during this distressful period, and we ask our Heavenly Father: “Lord, comfort them, give them strength, and surround them with Your unceasing love as we come to terms with this senseless tragedy, so that their healing process can start...”

I’ve set up a memorial site myself in honour of the 32 faithfully departed at

From “Thanatopsis” by William Cullen Bryant, 1794-1878:

Thou shalt lie down
with patriarchs of the infant world,
with kings,
the powerful of the earth,
the wise, the good,
fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past,
all in one mighty sepulcher.
The hills
rock-ribbed and ancient as the sun;
the vales
stretching in pensive quietness between;
the venerable woods—rivers that move
in majesty, and the complaining brooks
that make the meadows green;
and, poured round all,
Old Ocean’s gray and melancholy waste,—
are but the solemn decorations all
Of the great tomb of man!
