Condolences, April 17, 2007

I would just like to express my deepest sympathies to all the families, students and staff at Virginia Tech.  I was horrified when I heard and saw what occurred on Monday April 16.  I had the chance to watch the memorial on TV on Tuesday April 17 and was in tears just imagining what all the people there were going through.  I am a teacher and mother of 2 and could not imagine having to go through the nightmare each and every one of you is going through right now.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all.  Be strong and let time try to heal your wounds.

To the families, friends and students at Virginia Tech:

I’m so sorry for the terrible loss that you all have endured. None of us can ever understand why these incidents happen and so I extend to you my prayers during your time of need.  It is so hard to lose loved ones, and when their deaths happen in such a way as to catch you off guard, it makes you realize just how precious life is.  These next days, weeks, years will be the toughest and I will continue to pray for everyone.  Never forget that all though this is a difficult time, we are never alone through it all.  God is there beside us and we must remember to put our faith in Him.

2 Corinthians 1: 3-4a

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our troubles

I again send out my prayers to you all and the most heartfelt condolences.  May God be with each and everyone of you and give you the strength and comfort you need.

Penn State sends it’s love. It is in my deepest sorrow that friends, family, and fellow students had to go through such a tragedy.  My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been effected by such heinous actions.  During the PSU spring game this weekend, the traditional white will not be worn by me inside Beaver Stadium.  Instead I am hoping for a sea of orange and maroon.  “There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still” -FDR.

VT has always felt like a second home to me.  And I don’t even go there.  My sister graduated from Tech a couple of years ago, and before I even started school at JMU, I remember visiting her, and loving every minute of it.

The people alone at VT make it what it is.  I didn’t know anyone involved in this tragedy personally, but it has affected me in a way that I didn’t think was possible.  I can hardly concentrate on much of anything, and I am constantly thinking about everything that has happened.

To all of you Hokies out there, and affected loved ones, I want you to know you are never alone, and we will never forget.  I’ve read as much as I can on some of the victims, and they seemed like some pretty amazing people.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

My sister always wanted me to be a Hokie...well from this day on, I always will be.

Today we’re all Hokies…
So give a Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi!

With respect and appreciation for the President’s remarks today, I disagree with one statement.
They were in the right place and it was the right time. The victims were beginning a great day in their lives - teaching, learning, living.
There is no sense in madness. It could have happened in a supermarket, an office, store, anywhere. It happened at V- Tech.
Any of us, at any given time, can be said to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But doing what we love, wherever, makes anyplace the right place.
V-Tech is a great school and it will be greater still. Do not let this horror define your home, your alma mater.
May they Rest in Peace,
A Florida Gator (and Hokie in spirit),
Jack Hopkins
