I wish to express my condolences to the families who lost a loved one in the tragedy at VT. I looked at the photos and read the bios posted on the internet. I read each with a tear in my eyes and a heavy heart. So much was taken away on that fateful day. The value of all the lives lost cannot be measured. Young and old fell that day on a proud campus. I send my love and prayers to all Hokies. May God sustain you in your grief, strengthen you in your healing.  Pastor Bob S.

Dear Professor Giovanni,
Please allow me to intrude upon your grief to say thank you for your message of inspiration delivered at the Convocation.  Of all the speakers, including our President, you did more to lift up our students, our country and our world…more than you will ever know.  May God continue to bless you, strengthen and comfort you as you light the way for our VT Family.

I am both shocked and horrified by this terrible tragedy. These students and faculty members were inncoent people who lost their lives for no reason. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the families of all who’s lives were tragically cut short. My heart goes out to you and even though I was not closely connected to anyone involved in this senseless tragedy, I am a Virginia native and I have been deeply affected by this.
I am also a college student and a UVA fan, but no matter which college team I am a fan of, “We are all Hokies, we share your spirit, and no matter what we will prevail!!!”
My prayers and thoughts are with you the families and students of Virginia Tech. May God bless you as you begin to heal.

As a parent of six children I can only imagine the grief of the parents on losing their beloved children, spouses and friends.  All of West Michigan grieves with these parents.  The most inspiring thing I have witnessed via News stories is the amazing spirit and love of the Hokies.  I hope my children are fortunate to attend their one day.  I have been deeply touched by all of you down at VT.

I try to think of words, but none are adequate. What I can do is promise to love my son better (he is 23 and graduating this year from NCSU), to look to the world think of what the world missed by the loss of these lovely and fine people, and then each day, try and do something extra, that is good in the world even if a small something, with them in mind so in a small way they are kept always with us.

As the news of this tragedy spread, my first thought was “innocence lost”.  The words to a Dan Fogelberg song came to mind and I have taken some liberty to adapt them:

We’ll have a toast to innocence
We’ll have a toast to now
We’ll try to reach beyond the emptiness
But no one knows quite how

To all the families and friends of loved ones,
students, faculty and staff of Virginia Tech know many grieve beside you and wish you strength, love and peace.

I lived the first 26 years of my life as a Virginian, most of it spent breathing the very mountain air that hovers over the VT campus.  I never did take a class there, yet I am one of you.

Central Texas [Austin] has been my residency since 2000, but home is and always will be SW Virginia; and the “home team” is still the Hokies.

I was shocked at the horrific events that took place on Monday.  My shock of Monday changed by Tuesday to a kind of melancholy I have not felt in years.  And through all of the sadness, I believe HokieNation is rising to the occasion and that in the end, we will prevail.  We will triumph over the pain and sufferings of this week.  This loss will strengthen us and unite us as never before.

I am praying for you all as I mourn as one of you,

God Bless America – God Bless Virginia Tech.

Blacksburg

After the shots stopped ringing and the screams calmed down,
America realized terror struck this sleepy little town.
And as our hearts sank with grief and sorrow,
We realized some may never see tomorrow.
Everyone saw the pictures, many people cried,
We all suddenly got a sense of Hokie pride.
Millions watched in awe, many frantically dialed,
Checking on loved ones, as the number of fatalities piled.
Some looked for answers, others looked to God,
Falling to their knees, some right there on blood stained sod.
I am certain we will not forget, but life will go on,
And for Virginia Tech, there will be a new dawn.
So lets all root for those Hokies, if only for a short time,
Let them know we’re behind them on this new obstacle they’ll climb.
So let’s go Hokies, hold that bird up for all to see,
Through this fight, united, we’ll march to victory.

I am an alumnus of the University of Iowa, Class of 1966.  In 1991, a disgruntled grad student shot and killed 3 people on our campus.  One was a university Dean, one a professor and the third another grad student.  I have two nieces who are VT grads as well.  There is great evil in this world but greater love, and I hope and pray you in the VT community can feel and sense the love from all over our Nation.  As you recover, remember that recovery must be taken a day at a time.  Eventually, from this horrible event you will be strengthened in ways you cannot now foresee.  God bless all of you.
