To all the Hokies and the Hokies at heart.

This incident has deeply affected me despite the fact that I am in no direct relationship to any of the victims or mourners. I imagine your pain to be unfathomable, but take comfort that the entire world is reaching out to you in hopes that you will heal from such senseless violence.

As a student I will show solidarity with the VT student body on my own campus as I know many of my other classmates will. It may not be much, but please recognize it as an extention of the bountiful support you now have at your disposal.

I’m so sorry for your loss and this awful tragedy. While this is not the way for this to happen, I feel honored and humbled to get to know on any level such an amazing group of people who symbolize all the greatest things in this world, amazing, positive and successful individuals, brought together from a global and diverse community, sharing a common generosity of spirit, love of life and a contagious energy.

I’m sorry the world has lost such an amazing group of individuals. May we all find something here to take with us to live our lives in a different way and with the same vitality, love, passion and care that these victims did…

May we always carry on their work in this world with grace and humility.

Whether we have been personally affected or not, we all share in the pain of this horrible tragedy, the many beautiful lives that have been taking from us, the many injured and the long lasting effects on everyone.  I pray for strength for the families, friends, Hokies...I pray for us all.

If tears could build a stairway,
and memories build a lane,
We’d walk right up to heaven
and bring you home again!

And The Skies Cried Out Today

The Skies Cried Out Today

While Horror Played Out

On Our Fields

Of Higher Learning

The Skies Cried Out Today

While Innocence Was Lost

And The Blood Of The Pure Poured Forth

The Skies Cried Out Today

Drowining The Voices Of the Mother’s

Grasping For Their Children

Trying To Protect Them

And Being Unable To Reach Them

The Skies Cried Out Today

When Paradise Was Exploded

With The Crack Of Gunfire

And The Screams Of Terror

Rang Out Across The Green

No Rain, No Heavenly Cleansing From Above

Can Wash Away The Sins

Of This Day

Families Broken

Friendships Torn Apart

And The Skies Cried Out Today.

I wrote this directly after hearing of the attack.  In my part of the country, the morning had been sunny and beautiful, until around the end of the attack. Then, storm clouds rolled in and a heavy drizzle poured down. To me, it seemed like the sky was weeping for the events of the day. My sincerest sorrow for your loss and continuing support to you in this time of need.

To the parents and loved ones of all who were lost…

As we view their pictures and learn about their lives may all people realize that they were jewels in society.  May their greatness as human beings be a reflection of the good in the world. May their lives inspire others to live as they lived.  So many outstanding people struck down randomly by a very sick individual should teach the world that far more outstanding human beings walk on this earth.  The grief of losing a child is the most painful.  We will never forget your loss and the bright light they reflected on society.  In this dark time may the brightness of who they were shine through forever.

My deepest, heartfelt sympathy to victims, their families in this senseless tragedy. Thoughts and prayers always, with angels surrounding comforted in Jesus arms. He is with you always.
Remembered as bravest, brightest, lives filled with so much promise, cut short. They always made difference, could have been anything, the World so needs today. Good always wins over evil as long as we never allow anyone to steal our Joy.
Thank you for their life, laughter and your tears.

For Nikki:A Tribute To Virginia Tech

32 last breaths left this world breathless…
I slipped on my house shoes,
Poured me a bowl of cereal
And turned on CNN for breakfast
I tried adjusting the color,
But my screen was painted red
32 dead
Casualties climbing
It was selfish, but I thought of Nikki
Selected Poems of Love Poems Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea,
That I all have in My House
All blew open as a deathly wind
Snatched my breath away like I was an asthmatic
I flipped the channels, looking for Nikki
For Nikki to shed some light, to give some meaning
For Nikki to breathe life back into me
For Nikki to breathe…
I remembered the moment she inspired me,
“Balances”
And I wondered if this monster tried to balance his grade average
If he’d only read it
If he’d only read her
He would have been cured, his demons chased away
32 lives saved
How can we now balance 32 lives lost?
Nikki?

I wish to express my profound sadness over the senseless acts committed on April 16 and to extend to all those families touched by this day my sincerest condolences.  I did no know any of the victims personally but in a way I did.  They were part of the Virginia Tech extended family I joined when I became a student at Virginia Tech.  These brilliant stars are part of my family and I grieve for their loss.

My daughter had a small poem on her away message the day of the tragedy and it moved me.  I enclose it for your reading:
“Make haughty grass bend down its stalk
And mourn for all those killed.”

I read in Ecclesiastes, chapter 3 the words used in a popular song of my youth and it gives me comfort during these days.  In part is says “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: ..a time to mourn..and a time to heal.  Now is our time to mourn.

God bless all of you and remember that all Virginia Tech alumni are feeling your pain.  An old friend told me that there are two kinds of people.  The first are friends we have met and the other are friends we have not yet met.  To all students and families of Virginia Tech, you have lots of friends you have not met yet that are behind you.
