April 18, 2007, 9:17am • Sterling,, VA • #10698

All of you are in my thoughts and I hope that Remembrance of Their Name

We all say we saw the signs and here we are again
Traveling the wrong way down a one way street.
Do we ever learn the way? Or do we just ignore
All the warning of a washed out road ahead.

Now all we have are tears and pain left crying
Out the whys and what if’s.
Could we stop the falling of the rain or
Would it have happened all the same?

So many dead and gone and a sorrow in our
Hearts that’s filled with losing them.
Having shared in their triumphs’ and pain left out of
Their final pain and their triumphs’ washed away.

You cling to the thoughts of them and wonder
If you should yet the answer is in your hearts.
Remember them for who they were and keep them
Safe in your hearts and mind.

Never forget the loss you feel but turn it towards the good
Just because you hate history don’t forget the past.
Carry on the torch in their name so that others
Don’t befall the same.

Their loss makes the world an unhappy place so
Don’t let it consume you in the end.
Bring some light into this world by the remembrance
Of their names.

As a 1991 graduate of Virginia Tech, It is so hard to believe that such tragedy could happen in a beautiful and loving place as Blacksburg, VA. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victims and all of the extended Virginia Tech family. As Nikki said “We are Virginia Tech” and no one will ever take that away from us.

Psalms 34:17-19: “The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

2 Corinthians 4:16-18: “That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our inner strength in the Lord is growing every day. These troubles and sufferings of ours are, after all, quite small and won’t last very long. Yet this short time of distress will result in God’s richest blessing upon us forever and ever! So we do not look at what we can see right now, the troubles all around us, but we look forward to the joys in heaven which we have not yet seen. The troubles will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever.”

May God Bless all of you and know that we are all praying for you.

To all those who lost friends, family, or maybe trust in the idea that all people have some good in them - my prayers go out to you. You are not alone, God is right there with you - holding you in the palm of His hand. A poem for those left:

Should You Go First
“Should you go first and I remain,
To walk the road alone,
I’ll live in memory’s garden, dear,
With happy days we’ve known.
In Spring I’ll wait for roses red,
When fades the lilac blue,
In early Fall when brown leaves call
I’ll catch a glimpse of you.

Should you go first and I remain,
For battles to be fought,
Each thing you’ve touched along the way
Will be a hallowed spot.
I’ll hear your voice, I’ll see your smile,
Though blindly I may grope,
The memory of your helping hand
Will buoy me on with hope.

Should you go first and I remain,
One thing I’d have you do:
Walk slowly down that long, lone path,
For soon I’ll follow you.
I’ll want to know each step you take
That I may walk the same,
For some day down that lonely road
You’ll hear me call your name.”
-by Albert Kennedy “Rosey” Rowswell

Andrea

Dear Virginia Tech Staff and Students,

As I sit hear and read of who the victims were this has become overwhelming and hard for me to comprehend.  My daughter attends Hampton University and all I can think of are the parents who had to hear that their children lost their lives due to sensless violence.  I am brought to tears at the thought of what these poor children must have felt.  This must have been terrifying as well as confusing to them.  All I can say is that I hope we all learn something from this tragedy and find a way to prevent the next.  Columbine should have taught us all to not ignore signs of people with a preoccupation with violence.  Again my thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the victims.  Please know that your loved ones time hear on earth was not in vain!

VPI/SU of 1976-77 is the power on the resume, and for a merciful God, the reference place again of everything true and beautiful in the world.  May the bonds of our sanctuary campus that makes our rarified university walk fresh forever keep us together so that we can once again live in tomorrow of its enrichment and special gifts.  As our university paradise rains tears on its special and chosen guests of today, know only you are chosen of this moment, and ever will be etched in the world’s memory as models of strength.  Your collective hearts are an example of everything and once again of dignity, our lovely university, remembered of its spring finery, that remains forever.

love, lauren
