Condolences, April 18, 2007

To all those affected,
I had the privelege of visiting Virginia Tech last year and found a peaceful, loving atmosphere where everyone I met had a smile for me. Those smiles, and the closeness they represent, are going to be what keep you all strong in the future.
Those of us who have not been directly affected by this tragedy can’t begin to understand what you are going through, but please know that people across the world are crying with you.

"MY THOUGHTS ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS, NEITHER ARE YOUR WAYS MY WAYS, SAITH THE LORD.” ISIAH 55:8. I WOULD NEVER CHOOSE TO TAKE THE HOKIE NATION DOWN SUCH A DARK PATH, BUT AFTER MANY TEARS AND PRAYERS, HEALING WILL SLOWLY COME. MY FRIENDS AND I HAVE COME TO TECH TO SIT AND WATCH CONSTRUCTION AT LANE STADIUM, MAYBE 20 OR SO TIMES TO SEE HOW THE GRASS THAT WAS INSTALLED WAS DOING, I EVEN COME THROUGH CAMPUS ON MY WAY TO CHURCH BECAUSE THE VIEWS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL. TO ALL THOSE WHO LOST SO MUCH I WANT YOU TO READ PSALM 116:15-THAT WILL COMFORT YOU THE WAY NO ONE ELSE CAN. GO HOKIES!!! ALLEN WORRELL

Each day and night that I awake, I am almost consumed by my remorse for the tragedy that unfolded on your campus this week. Because of daily and continuous prayers, I firmly believe that, as Jesus rose, the mighty Hokies, as with others in similar situations, “will rise again” and will be stronger. As Psalms 97 says: “Love the Lord and hate evil! God protects his loyal people and rescues then from violence.” My family’s prayers are sent to “our school” and to all who experienced losses on all levels.  Mattie Evans. April 18, 2007

My name is David. I am saddened by the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech. I am Jewish. I read that one of your professors, Liviu Librescu, acted heroically and saved the lives of some of his students by throwing his body in front of the door to keep Cho Seung-Hui from entering. In the process Mr. Librescu lost hsi life. I read that he was a Holocaust survivor. It is sad that he was able to survive Nazi Germany only to be silenced by a deranged student. He was murdered on Yom HaShoah- the holiday we Jews observe in remembrance of the Holocaust. Starting next year when the Yom Hashoah is observed I will say a prayer for Liviu Librescu’s family.

The Virginia Tech community has the support of all the right thinking people around the world. What happened there was nothing short of horrible .

However, as they say, the show must go on. We must learn from this experience. Guns should be banned from the campuses of learning, constitutional right not withstanding. Not only that, the area around the colleges/ university should have a minimum stipulated mile radius, where such sale should be prohibited.

For the students and the faculty of VT, I offer my condolence, knowing very well that sitting half way round the world, I cannot even imagine the feeling that you would be undergoing. But take heart, and carry on, or the killer would succeed in dampening the spirit that should be kept alive if mankind has to prosper.

I am so so so sorry about what you are going though...I understand to a degree because my children go to the Weston School District in Wisconsin, where our principal, John Klang, (our Hero Forever) gave his life while taking a gun from a student this year. My children, my life, were in different classrooms but not 50 feet from where this occurred. If he, and Dave Thompson, who took a shotgun away from him, and Chuck Keller, a teacher, had not turned him away at first and gone in the office to get on the PA to alert the school to lock down, I don’t know what might have happened. There were so many students in the hallway because they were doing homecoming activities. I knew in my heart that there had to be many people there, at Virginia Tech, that did selfless sacrifices, and from what I’m hearing there were. Just remember that there are so many more good people than bad people. That sounds so simplistic, but it is a basic truth. I am so, so sorry, and I can’t stop crying about it. My love and prayers to you all...Barbara Wacholtz

To all of my fellow Hokies. I know words cannot help much, but from across the ocean let me tell you that everyone in London is grieving with you and your colleagues and students and the families of Va Tech. It is a tragedy beyond our true comprehension. I am so proud to be an Alumni of Va Tech(Arch 79) It is without a doubt the strength of character, pride, self belief, thirst for knowledge and friendships that are the things I have taken from Va Tech that have made me a better person.  I feel inadequate that I cannot now give something in return that makes a difference to those that grieve. However, I can and do offer you my prayers. I know the community of Va Tech will come through this and we will continue to be proud of our University and support each other as we always have. I trust this tragedy will not scar our University or tarnish its fine reputation but give it a renewed sense of purpose to teach at the very highest standards and to open its arms to all that seek knowledge. The world is watching Va Tech. Let them see the character we are made of. Please hold your head high, don’t have knee jerk reactions and keep our campus a place that is open and welcomes all who respect it and our students, faculty and friends.
