Condolences, April 18, 2007

To the students, faculty, and staff and all of their families, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of extreme tragedy.  Those of us who work in the academic community find ourselves concerned and a bit confused about what to do--how do we protect each other?  The one thing we do know is that we are with you in spirit.  We may not have known those who were so tragically taken away personally, but we mourn with their families at such a monumental loss.

I was shocked and saddened to watch the events of Monday unfold on my television screen.  We at Oklahoma State have experienced our fair share of tragedy and it is an unfortunate fraternity that I ardently wish Virginia Tech had not joined.  Know that the prayers of this OSU Cowgirl/Wake Forest Demon Deacon/Baylor Bear are with all of Hokie Nation as you try to recover from these terrible events.

There are no words to describe the empathy we feel for those affected by this tragedy. It blows my mind that one person can cause so much hurt to so many innocent, wonderful people. Rise above. Rely on those around you. Talk about it. Rest assured knowing that thousands, even millions, of people are praying for you and thinking about you every second. Thank you for your perseverence. Thank you for strength. Thank you for your devout sense of community. Virginia Tech will be remembered for all of these attributes- not April 16th. My thoughts, tears and prayers are with each and every one of you. Return to your school with pride and peace of mind. Finish the semester out strong.  You have inspired us all.

I pray tonight for all the friends and family.  Its just had they had to leave this world the way they did. I hope this will help. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.

I wrongly assumed those who felt the wrath of this terrible event were certainly only VT Hokie students, alumni, and/or our parents.  It took 2 different persons today to remind me this isn’t about whether you have an association to VT or not.  A woman at the USPS here in downtown Chicago saw my VT sweatshirt and asked whether I had attended the school.  I said yes, and that it has been a long, hard few days for Hokies everywhere.  She paused, she looked at me, and said it’s been a long, hard few days for everybody.  As I left and got on my motorbike, an older gentleman approached me, motioned for me to stop, and then hugged me.  As I left, he stood there with a thumbs up.  Everybody is hurting with us, everybody.  Shane K., Class of 2001

This event has left me speechless, as I cannot fathom the reason behind Cho’s actions. I cry when I see the names and profiles of the victims, some who were even my age or younger. This shouldn’t have happened to anyone.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you all, as this is something I will never forget.
RIP all who were tragically killed. It seems that everyone touched the lives of so many people, and it is ashame that many people will never get the great opportunity to meet them.

At the rising of the sun and at its going down,
We remember them.

At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of Winter, We remember them.

At the opening of buds and in the rebirth of Spring,
We remember them.

At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of Summer,
We remember them.

At the rustling of leaves and the beauty of Autumn,
We remember them.

At the beginning of the year and when it ends,
We remember them.

As long as we live, they too will live;
for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength,
We remember them.

When we are lost and sick at heart,
We remember them.

When we have joys we yearn to share,
We remember them.

When we have decisions that are difficult to make,
We remember them

When we have achievements that are based on theirs,
We remember them.

As long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are a part of us, as we remember them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the VA TECH families. Be strong for you are not alone.

It is beyond my comprehension why and how something like this has happened.  I cannot express how much sorrow I feel for the families and friends of the one’s who lost their lives at this tragic time.  My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been touched by this tragedy, and I believe the whole world has been touched by this.  There is nothing I can say to make this any easier.  Pray, and then pray some more, and know that these innocent people have been taken into G-d’s arms, and know they are in a better place.  I have to believe this, because this world has become such a sad place.  G-d bless their souls.
