Condolences, April 18, 2007

A Prayer for Those Who are Gone
Yet Shall Never be Forgotten
God, bless the souls who passed on because of one man’s actions and please give special care to the one who pulled the trigger. To those who have died, we will carry on your messages, we will carry on your dreams, we will carry on your hearts. Your families, friends, and strangers will live on in honor of you.
We will honor you all forever more, and you especially, Liviu Librescu, you gave your life for the students you saved. Thank you. God, tell us why this happened, tell us what this one person was thinking, and let every one of the survivors know that each and everyone of us at Thomas More High School cares. We are not just Cavaliers but now Hokies as well.
Please bless the now deceased.

Amen.

VT Students, Faculty and Family,

I am still shocked by what has happened in Blacksburg this week.  Words can’t describe how I feel.  We have to turn to God now to help us through this horrible time.  Please know you are all in our family’s thoughts and prayers.  I am so proud to see how everyone around the world has joined together to support the Hokies. Our family is a Wahoo family....but this week we are Hokies too.
God Bless, Kevin and Stephanie Garrett and children

Our thoughts & prayers are with you.  We lost a 16 year old son two years ago in a tragic “choking game” accident, that was horrible, and a nightmare to go through - esp. for the younger children who found him.  We have a glimpse of your pain, anxiety, and loss.  We know you will never forget your loved ones, and that you will always have scars, but joy DOES come again - and laughter will be more than tears.  Give your self time for healing.  In the meantime let others hold you through this.

In Michigan,
Loni

The Hokie Nation has been shaken but not destroyed.  Your pain is our pain, your tears are our tears.....may our strength give you strength, and our faith give you faith.  This can and will be overcome.  The Virginia Tech family, the country, and the world are mourning with you.

Dear Students, Staff, Friends and Family of Virginia Tech University,

This incredible tragedy has shocked the world to it’s core - and not for one minute am I going to even try and pretend that I know what you are going through, I cannot even fathom to think.

There is one thing that brings a smile to my face, through the horror and sadness, and that is the pictures of the beautiful people of VT - sharing their tears and comforting each other, it’s so nice to see that everyone is pulling together and supporting each other.

I feel so helpless being so far away, that is why I feel so compelled to let you all know that Australia is thinking of you and Australia is mourning with you - so far away, yet so affected.

They may be gone, but their memory will never fade - you cannot allow it!

What’s a Hokie?

As a Va Tech cheerleader I was asked this question many times?  My response was it’s just a nickname taken from a cheer.  It never was a satisfying answer.

Now we have an answer thanks to Dr. Giovanni.

What’s a Hokie?  We are Virginia Tech.  The words themselves are engimatic.  However, placed in the context of the response of the Hokie Nation, it speaks volumes.

The courage, resolve, heart-felt emotions and determination after our tragedy demonstrated what a Hokie is.  Imagine the power, strength and determination now given by this phrase, We are Virginia Tech.

Don Windon, Va Tech class of 1982

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Although I only knew one student killed, my heart goes out to all those affected by this senseless act.

Emily J. Hilscher was an aquaintence at the barn where she keeps her horse, Jack.  I only met her a few times, and rode with her on the trail once, but she was so kind and sweet, helpful to others, and a fantastic horsewoman.  they say that a person’s horse is a reflection of the owner....Jack is the horse that everyone wishes was theirs.  Emily did such a wonderful job training him...he is sweet, well mannered, and a real tribute to her.  We will all miss her smile, and miss riding with her.

We will continue to pray for her family, as well as the families of those affected by this.  may God bless Va Tech with peace and healing for those wounded in spirit, and those wounded in body.

To the families, friends, and the university community:

As a writer this is the first time I have found myself at a total loss for words…

I, as well as, the nation and even around the world, wish to extend my sympathies and prayers to all that have been affected by this horrific and catastrophic event.

This is beyond the scope of human comprehension.

This leads me to a difficult but necessary thought:

We cannot exhaust ourselves in search of the answer as to why-instead we need to use this energy to heal and move forward. Obviously, much easier said than done.

Find comfort in GOD as he is with us all. If you practice a different faith-find comfort in your “higher being”.

This is a global crisis of monumental proportions.

It is a very sobering and frightening example of our world today-yet perhaps somehow, someway, we can learn from this and protect the future generations from this tragic and inexcusable failure of the “system”.

My heartfelt sympathies and prayers to all.

GOD BLESS-

Words can never express what we feel.  Know that there are so many people world wide greiving with you.  We do not even begin to know what you feel or what you have seen.  As I watch the T.V. and see the faces of those who perished my heart goes out to the families and friends.  As a parent of 3 its scarey to see this happen.  As a mother I so wish I could come to Virginia and just hold and hug as many of you young adults that need it.  You can tell that there is so much disbelief and shock.  There is also such love and pride and spirit.  Please know that not just today but in all the days ahead that there are so many people lifting you and your professors up in prayer.  God Bless each of you.  Livestrong Hokie Pride!!!  Hugs to all.  Peace and Prayers.  Andrea Ingram

some may ask why could a person do this?  We really need to ask what can be done to stop it again, lets look inside ourselves to see that answer. Stop for awhile and pray for the lost.  our thoughts and prayers are with them.  mothers and fathers can’t always understand what their children do.  My thoughts go out to every one who has been touched by this.  We should however realize that the media must recognize that there are people out there who use this as an reason for other mindless acts, think first about covering this to the excess , but limit it to stop this from repeating again.  Mr. B

To all members of the Hokie Nation who have been effected by the horrific, tragic events of April 16th on the campus of Virginia Tech, I send my deepest condolences.  My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone.  It’s time to stand up, unite and show the world that the Hokie Nation may be down right now, but we will rise up against adversity and be stronger than ever!

To the students and families of students who are considering leaving Tech for good because of the events of April 16th, I beg you PLEASE do not do this!  Virginia Tech is the greatest institution in the world!  Be proud of where you are and knowing you are a part of the two greatest nations in the world....The United States of America AND the HOKIE NATION!  It’s ok to be afraid right now.  We all are.  It’s ok to show your emotions.  Let it all out.  It’s more than ok to go home, regroup, and be with loved ones.  Just don’t walk away for good from the greatest school on earth.  Get your degree and, again, be proud that you graduated from a wonderful school...Virginia Tech!

God bless you all.

My Grandaughter Alisa Leigh is the littlest Hokie fan. She is 5 yrs old and she knows what happend at the school. She sends her prayers to all the families that have lost a child and to all of the staff at Tech. She still wants to be a Hokie when she grows up. She said she knows all the kids that were hurt are in heaven with her Uncle Lonnie that she loved so very much. I wanted to send you a picture of her in her entire Hokie out-fit that she wears when the Hokies play football but the site wouldnt allow me too.

At a time of great anticipation for the school year to end, graduation, and beginning a new chapter in so many college students’ lives, our nation is in sorrow for all of you!  My heart, prayers, and thoughts are with not only the family of the loved ones lost to this horrific act, but I am also praying for the family of the shooter, as they are also going through such guilt and shame, as well as sorrow.  Although God took home many new angels at one time, they will remain alive, loved, and forever a part of your lives, as well as in the hearts of our nation.  God bless all of you in the days, weeks, and months you move forward in.  K & M

Too Young To Die
by Brooklynn Kirkwood

What if tomorrow my life,
is nothing but a past.
A life lived way too shortly,
one that didn’t last.

What if tomorrow I don’t wake up,
to see your peaceful eyes.
What if my life is taken away,
before I am ready to die.

I have so much more left to do,
so many experiences I would miss.
The things I wouldn’t get to say,
the feeling of your gentle kiss.

I am not ready to leave,
and I am too young to die.
I want to live longer,
I’m not ready to say good-bye.

But my end is coming fast,
so I want to tell you this.
Of all the people I am leaving behind,
it’s you who I will miss.

It’s hard to imagine that such a horrible thing could happen in such a special place.  And it is still a very special place, and so are the people there.  It’s a privilege to be a Virginia Tech Alumnus.
I am so proud of my Hokie brothers and sisters who stood by our university during the grueling tv interviews.  We are proud and loyal.
It’s hard to be thankful for much at time like this, but we really must be thankful for… the wonderful professor who sacrificed his life to allow his students to escape out the window… for the first responders who did such an excellent job, and who will always carry these horrible images in their minds...for the boy who overslept and wasn’t able to enter Norris because the doors were chained...and for everyone spared in WAJ and Norris, and there’s more, I’m sure.
My heart goes out to everyone who lost someone, a daughter, son, sister, brother, friend.  Any life lost is one too many.  May God grant you the grace to grieve adequately.  It’s okay. Then may your new life open up to be something more than you can even imagine at this time.  Living strongly and fully in your loved one’s memory.

With my deepest sympathy
-Kristi S

I have watched much television coverage of this awful set of events, and I am awed by the love and community expressed repeatedly by so many of those at Virginia Tech.
