Condolences, April 18, 2007

Although I live in Missouri and have no one connected with your school, I grieve with you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers - students, families, faculty, and emergency personell who “worked this call” - anyone connected with the school. Moving on will take a lot of courage - I’m sure you will have to work very hard to ever feel safe again, but with the wonderful spirit that is at your school and the people in charge - and the prayers of a nation, you can do it.  Joyce

All I can do is read and cry, read and cry, of all these lives cut short, so senselessly short, calling us all to be better than we are now and fill in where all of these beautiful people would have been in their beautiful ways...we must fill in and do their work and make them proud.  Bless all of you, faculty and students, you should never ever have to face this, never ever have to deal with this.  We are with you, we are with you.

To the Virginia Tech Collective Family,

Please allow me to extend my deepest regards to you during your time of grief. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you struggle to make meaning of a senseless act.  In events such as this, we are all reminded of the inevitable fragility of the human existence.  I pray that this tragedy will play a major role in moving us toward productive dialogues that will ultimately work toward addressing the impact of violence on our society, as a whole.

We are angry, sad, and so sorry all at the same time.

We are angry that a young man with so much malevolence, so much vitriole, and so much arrogance and ego was willing to take the lives of so many young people at your beloved Virginia Tech.

We are sad; we are sad for this millenial generation attending VT to be faced with such violence.  You don’t deserve it; you are not at fault even though Cho wants you to think it so.

You don’t deserve this; this is not your fault.
You don’t deserve this; this is not your fault.

We are sorry; we are sorry for all the families...all the families of 26,000 students who now have such a horrible memory of their youth, forever burned into their mind’s eye.  We are sorry for the families of 32 innocents.

They did not deserve this; it is not their fault.
They did not deserve this; it is not their fault.

May God hold you, the whole community that is Virginia Tech, and the families of the 32...in the loving Peace and embrace of God’s love.  May you find comfort, re-find faith in humanity, and His Peace.

Even in my suffering I was comforted,
because your promise gave me life.
Psalm 119:50
Happy are those who mourn,
God will comfort them.

Then the young women will dance and be happy,
and men young and old, will rejoice,
I will comfort them,
and turn their mourning into joy,
their sorrow into gladness.

My name is Mia McLeod and I’m a student at Ga State University. I am so deeply saddened by this tragedy and my heart is very heavy. I mourn for every family and light a candle for the 32 victims every night. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain the Va Tech community is feeling, but I’ve lost 3 friends recently, so I know the feeling of losing someone who means something all to well. My friend Ashley Davis goes to Va Tech and lost her friend Erin Peterson. I’m so blessed that she is ok, but I am still upset that this happened to anyone. I will continue to pray for the Va Tech community. Know that the nation mourns with you and that you are not alone, for God knows your pain. Look to Him for comfort and do your best to hold your head high. From one college student to another, God Bless you all. I’m a Hokie too.

Friends,

THE day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains,and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains,and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart, and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Our thoughts are with you all.  Know that the world is here for you.  It will get better.  All our Love.

For Lauren

Today is April 18, 2007.  Two days ago early in the morning the weather was as raw and cold as a January day.  The wind blew hard and strong; snow was falling.  I wondered as I looked out my window “where is spring?” Where is the warm, welcoming yellow-green of new leaves coming forth on the trees?  Where are the beautiful blooms of the serviceberry, dogwood and plum?  The trees are brown and sad.  Why?  Several days of sub-freezing temperatures cut them off just before bloom.  Blossoms shriveled on branches.
By 10:00 Monday morning the sun was shining, but 33 blossoms were dead.  Cut down by a cold, hard, calculating wind.  It shattered them and blew them away.  We are stunned.  Dazed.  Why?  God knows.
Blacksburg is beautiful in the spring, but not this year.
When will spring come?
Someday… perhaps today.

“Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4

Lauren, a beautiful blossom, in newness of life, shining in heaven. Glory be to God.

Between 1978 and 1988, while teaching in McDowell County WV, I passed Virginia Tech many many times while traveling to NY state to visit family.  When I left in 1988 to return to NY to teach, I always continued to keep track of how the Hokies were doing during football season.  We share your grief here in NY, just as you shared ours on Sept. 11, 2001.  Our thoughts, prayers and love are with you.  Janice Sweet

WOW....Someone who can do such a thing, such an evil thing, doesn’t notice that their lives will end up effected too. I pour my heart out to those loved one of all the victims. My prayers and condelonses will be sent out, until everything sinks in. I am a student at Jefferson Forest High School and I’m also a Freshman. I walk around and see people wearing t-shirts and supporting VT, but I also think do they really understand what has happened, because when we watch the news in class, they still sit and talk about rumors and things that mean nothing, like the devistation of the VT MASSACRE. Again, my prayers are sent to all families and friends.

My heart goes out to the victims, their families, the school and also to the family of the person responsible for all the grief we share at this time.  It is so very difficult to see the pictures of all these young people, their lives ended in an instant when they have barely begun to live. I cry and wonder why?  HOw do these horrible, horrible things happen to such innocent and good people. I offer my sincere condolences to the families of the victims. I cannot even imagine what it must be like to receive the news as you did; I am a mother and am so very sad for all of you.  God Bless you and stay strong.  .

Pamela DeLancey Jenkins

Our anguish will run
deep and turbulent,
as the New River flows.
We will ride it together,
as we have done
in happier times,
and we will find calm
in our unity.

For we are “HOKIES”.
Strong.
Proud.
We will remain unified.
We will survive.
We will prevail over evil.
We will rise from these ashes,
a beautiful Phoenix.
Our voices will not be stilled
and we will make a difference.
This horror will not stand.

My heart aches for all of you.  This profound tragedy is unfathomable to many of us around the world but the compassion is heartfelt.

I don’t know if anyone will ever fully comprehend how this came to pass but please know that the pain and horror will eventually be replaced by fond memories of those lost.

To the students and faculty who witnessed this, please understand that you are all victims too.  Seek help from your family, friends or professionals to deal with this.  Bottling it all up inside is never the right thing to do.

Many thoughts and prayers from a mother in Oklahoma.

A tragedy unfolded today that filled my eyes with tears
Filled my heart with the utmost of fears

To the fallen that didn’t deserve this end
To the families whose love we all commend

I pray for you all with the utmost of care
God give us the strength and the heart to bare

The pain unfolds in all of us at this terrible time
The sun has set, but our hearts are open wide

To all of you reading this and those close to this tragedy
I pray to God to give us all peace and serenity

That we may learn by this horrific event
And realize our hearts are heavensent

I am not a student nor do I know anyone from Virgina tech
But the good Lord has touched my heart to post here and comment
