Condolences, April 18, 2007

I am in such a lost of words right now - There are no words to describe how deeply saddened I am by this horrible tradegy to these innocent people.  What upsets me the most is that these are innocent people, justing trying to get an education or earn a living and they became the victims of a troubled individual gone mad.  I am so sorry that this has happened.  My heart goes out to these students/facaulty and their family/friends.  My thoughts and prayers are with you...May God be with you during this difficult time

Dear Hokies,
My heart breaks for you all.
While I can only imagine what you have endured and what you are going through, I pray for your comfort.  I have always admired the Virginia Tech Hokies.  The rich traditions and close knit community are very similar to what I have had at Texas A&M.  As a community, I know you have come together and you will prevail.
From the bottom of my heart, God Bless you and your families.

In just a moment they were gone
From the tragedy that struck your home.
Don’t forget them through the years
Nor their laughter and their tears.
Remember the special times you shared
And all the reasons that you cared.
Although your loss the bear is great
Your hearts will be their resting place.

My son and I visited the campus the Thursday and Friday before the tragedy. The visit was to help him decide between Tech and his other options. We found the campus and community to be wonderful. He said “Dad, this is where I belong” Seeing how the community has come together in the face of this tragedy has served to steel his resolve to attend in the fall. Our family’s thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected by this senseless tragedy.

"Into The West”

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You’ve come to journey’s end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore

Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You’re only sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass

Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don’t say: “We have come now to the end”
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again

And you’ll be here in my arms
Just sleeping

And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West

With Love and Sorrow,
Paige Mitchell

Although the lost lives of the younger students and professors are perhaps more tragic, considering the lives ahead of them, I have found myself most moved by the stories I have read of Professor Librescu’s actions.
To look the devil in the eye and refuse to give a inch- in the face of Nazis, by refusing to align himself with a political party and being ostracized in his homeland and again, years later, in the face of an unpredictable and troubled boy- is something that only a truly wise man could do.
I would be willing to wager that these were not the first lives that he helped to save in his years on this troubled planet.
Our generation may consider looking to his actions and life as something to draw upon in times of deep crisis.

I lived outside of Richmond for 3 years, I am now back home in Pa. Upon moving to Virginia, the first thing I was taught was the meaning of “Hokie”. I thought I knew what it was until Monday. The Definition of a Hokie has grown to mean so much more. I now wear my Vtech sweatshirt with pride and honor. As your community has shown so much to those through out the world in such a difficult time. I would embrace you all with a hug if I could. So for now, I will embrace you in my heart.

To our friends at Virginia Tech…

Please know that the thoughts and prayers of thousands are with you at this time. Although the horrific acts that were perpetrated against you will undoubtedly leave a mark forever on the family that is VT, THIS is NOT what will define Virginia Tech. Your courage, your caring, your collective strength and your mission is strong and firmly in place...these are the things that have and will define you. Peace be with all of you at this time.

Students,Faculty,Staff & Families,
Our hearts go out to all of you. As a parent of a student @ University of Pittsburgh, I can not fathom all that you are going through in these terrible days. My wife & I were captured with the thought that this could have happened at any other college and any other class room including our son’s. As our adult small group Bible study meets tonight, we will dedicate a time of prayer for all of you. Turn your hearts, tears and emotions over to the only one who can affect change in all of us and allow us to move forward in life that is God Himself. God bless you and keep you in His loving hand.

Dear Hokies,

There is nothing that anyone could say or do to make this any easier.  But, coming from someone on the outside looking in on this, I want nothing more other than to help and ease your pain.  I’m so sorry about what you all are going through.

I send prayers to all of the victim’s families and friends.  I hope that those who personally witnessed this tragedy are able to move on… you all are in my thoughts - I can’t imagine what you are going through.  To the rest of the Hokies, please keep your heads up and don’t be scared.  This is a time to mourn, cry when you need to - talk about it as much as you can.

Life is precious and is a gift.  We all must learn from this and move on… but never forget.

-Sarah

I was watching in unbelief as this unfolded on the internet. I was watching with tear streaming from my eyes afterwords and the next day as they showed the faces of the victims. May God give all those who are affected by this tragedy peace(those who watched and those who are suffering). Weeping man endurth for a night but joy cometh in the morning. It is so hard to understand why things like this happen.I just pray that God will give us all the understanding we are in need of today and the days to come.

I would like to just express my extreme sadness at the recent events that have hit your community.I am also a student and a parent and I couldn’t fathom losing my child or having this happen at my college. That is why I am remembering all the lives lost and thinking of the lives left affected by the tragedy.I am remembering and thinking of you every minute of my day.The whole country is carrying the weight of your burden on our shoulders.I am deeply saddened at the state the world is in.There is so much unneccessary violence and I believe that we need to unite and come together to fight the atrocities in the world. It’s sad but I believe that the killer was already dead inside that’s how he was able to massacre so many others and we need to unite and help people come together.Love truly does conquer all.

Peace be with all the families, students, staff, faculty and everyone else impacted by this act. I leave you with the Lord’s Prayer.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever and ever. Amen
